BT have made a step forwards by releasing their latest Home Hub wireless internet router. A few improvements have been made to this fairly popular internet modem. First off, the wireless connection has taken a large boost in that it now supports 802.11n. 802.11n is still in draft although a number of devices are now utilizing this standard. Secondly, the wi-fi connection is more secure now with WPA security being set up as standard out of the box. Previous versions of the Home Hub were just running the insecure WEP security technology.
This latest wireless router also acts as a DECT phone cradle just like it’s predecessor. Back to the wireless though and draft n specifications. What the new specs allow is double the range of wi-fi signals. With the mixture of this and the more secure WPA defaults it is surely a safer box to browse with at home. Looking on to the green side of things, the BT box now automatically shuts down the wi-fi connection when not in use which can conserve about 20% of it’s total energy usage.
Several different pricing packages are available for the Home Hub. Paying £21 and above a month will see you get the box for free while the £16 a month option will have you paying £90 for the unit. If you are currently an existing customer then the upgrade cost is £45.
