Facebook turns Twitter?

by Matthew on July 1, 2009

facebookFacebook are holding a conference today in the US and an expected announcement is that they will be allowing you to make your status updates public. At the moment, for people to see your updates they need to be logged in to Facebook and depending on your security settings, they may also need to be your friend. This rumoured update will make it an option where you can let the world see your updates just like the default Twitter settings.

Facebook is already testing public updates in a limited beta trial, but an email setting on the Facebook options page offering notifications when someone connects as a fan is a strong hint that the feature is about to roll out across the site’s 200million and counting users.

It seems that Facebook are heading in the direction of twitter with this update in that they want the world to see what everyone is doing. Hopefully this option will be opt-in rather then opt-out as that would cause some really annoyance among many Facebook users.

We’ll update again when we have the official details.
