GMail Remote Sign out Feature

by Matthew on July 8, 2008

Google have added a new feature to their GMail web interface which allows users to now see if anybody else is logging in to their account, or check to see if you forgot to log off on another computer. The new feature allows you to click a link which will log other users out of your GMail account should you desire to rid them.

With GMail being a web based email app, it is quite common for people to use it while on the go. Forgetting to log out can cause security issues and this feature receives a nice welcome to help you stay on top of the security of your account.

The information can be found at the bottom of your inbox. The screen shows the time of the last activity, if the account is open (in another location) as well as the IP address of the computer it is open up on. Other useful information is also available which shows the “type” of connection open. Should you be a mobile phone browser then it could be that you forgot to log off the browser on your phone. Alternatively, you might be receiving email via the POP3 protocol every 20 minutes on another computer. These sessions would also show up for you to see.

Due to the scale of GMail, the application hasn’t fully rolled out yet although a number of people are sharing their experiences with this new feature.

Good service and I hope that this will help users of the website etc. to have confidence that the provider is interested in protecting the users interests. There are thousands of persons using the internet in the global village that is just a click away from anyone.

I am fascinated by the things that one could do through modern technology and therefore, whatever it takes to maintain this service, please, keep doing the best.
