In a recent conversation with one of our suppliers in the office, the sales rep on the phone said that tech support wont be needed in companies in 5 years time. The reason behind his thinking was that as the younger generation of folk are leaving school and starting out in their office jobs they already bring the basic skill set with them and thus, can fix their own problems.
What are your thoughts on this? I personally do not agree 100% as there will always be technical tasks beyond what basic skill sets require, but as for 1st line support and covering the basics I can agree with them on this. In talking with friends of the family I often here that they “leave their computer problems to their son to fix now”. The youth of today are already versed in setting up their computers, installing and removing software, clearing out virus’s and often, setting up a wireless network.
It’s only a matter of time before the younger generation can cope with the regular day to day support problems we all encounter in the office.
