What is RSS?

RSS is a system by which you can subscribe to the contents of a website by email or via a feedreader. RSS allows you to keep track of your favourite websites all in 1 feed reader to get rid of the need to visit each site individually.

Email Subscription

Email Subscriptions are fairly straight forwards. When you subscribe to a website via email you then receive an email each day if content has been added to the site. This allows you to keep up with content without needing to check the site. All email based subscriptions are opt-in meaning you have to enter your email address and then click to approve that you want to receive the email. At any point you can unsubscribe from an email subscription by clicking a link at the bottom of the email.

RSS Subscriptions

RSS feeds require that you some sort of reader. There are various RSS feed readers around such as Google Reader in which you click the RSS feed link and then tell google you want to keep track of the contents of the said site. Once logged in to Google Reader you will have a list of posts from blogs that you have subscribed to which you can read in chronological order. Thus, a subscription to many blogs allows you to visit just the Google Reader website and keep all content in one place.

What does RSS stand for?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and it is basically what it says on the tin, a really simple syndication tool allowing you to keep all content in 1 place.
